Plan an Outdoor Getaway to Joplin

Michael Moore • February 7, 2025

Nestled in Missouri’s southwest corner near the Oklahoma and Kansas’ borders is Joplin, a city rife with opportunities to explore nature

Joplin, Missouri, population about 50,000, is a picturesque stop in the state’s southwest corner. The center of the four-state area that includes Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas and Kansas, Joplin is located on the outer edge of the Ozarks Mountains. The city, which was the lead and zinc mining capital of the world in the mid-19th Century, is now the perfect spot for a weekend escape where visitors can soak up the ambiance from the beautiful natural scenery that decorates the area.

Planning a vacation to Joplin is ideal any time of year thanks to the city’s relatively nice weather. Although spring can be wet and sometimes bring tornadoes, winter and summer often see milder weather without too much snowfall or extreme heat. Nature lovers can enjoy the ample parks, hiking trails and serene areas that litter the greater area while they enjoy time in as many as four states on a single vacation. If you’re ready for a peaceful retreat to Middle America, Joplin is the place to be!

Five fun ways to spend time in Joplin

Enjoy a glass of wine in the picturesque countryside at Christine’s Vineyard. This family-friendly winery is open weekends and usually has live entertainment as well as delicious local food for purchase so you can kick back and relax with a glass of locally-made wine in your glass.

Pose for a picture or grab a seat and enjoy the view at Grand Falls, the largest continuously-flowing natural waterfall in Missouri. No swimming is allowed at Grand Falls, although visitors are certainly invited to explore and enjoy the natural area and all that it has to offer.

Whether or not you like to fish, you’re sure to enjoy the Neosho National Fish Hatchery. Just 30 minutes from Joplin, this spot opened in 1888 and is the oldest operating fish hatchery in the United States. Guests can learn about fish, wander the grounds, feed the fish in the ponds and more. Fun for all ages!

Bring history to life at the George Washington Carver National Monument. Born into slavery, George Washington Carver is known today as an esteemed inventor and scientist. Explore the 240-acre national park where he was raised and learn about what life was like for him 100 years ago.

Get your kicks on historic Route 66. Hum the tune in your head as you cruise down Main Street in Joplin, traveling the once-famous route that took vacationers and adventure seekers from Chicago all the way west to Santa Monica, California.

Happy travels!
