Central Missouri Fun

Get away today to the center of the Show Me State for some history, some adventure and a lot of fun.

The middle of Missouri is home to some seriously fun spots. The University of Missouri, for one, also called Mizzou, calls Columbia home and is an SEC school with great sports programs. Mid Missouri is home to Jefferson City, the state’s capital. It is a stop-off point on your journey from Kansas City to St. Louis, but it is truly an area not to be missed. Mid Missouri is definitely a destination unto itself!

A getaway to central Missouri blends indoor and outdoor fun with the Midwestern hospitality you expect from the Show Me State. Whether you want to hike or dine, play or relax, the Jefferson City and surrounding area has something for you and your travel mates. So pack your bags and head to Mid Mo for a getaway you won’t soon forget.

6 fun things to do in Central Missouri

  • Tour the Missouri State Penitentiary. Originally founded in 1836, the Missouri State Penitentiary is now one of the top-rated activities in Jefferson City. Most guests choose between the two-hour history tour, great for those who want to learn about this fascinating spot, and the two-hour ghost tour, for those who want a slight scare. Either way, don’t miss this intriguing jailhouse!
  • Spend some time with nature at the serene Shelter Insurance Gardens. This spot is open to the public and maintained by students from universities in the Columbia area. It has 14 features, including a replica one-room schoolhouse, a waterfall, a rock garden and more. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the scenery!
  • Catch some live music at The Blue Note, one of Columbia’s top live music venues. Located in downtown Columbia, The Blue Note hosts up-and-coming singer songwriters, musicians, bands and more and sometimes hosts national acts, as well. This intimate venue is great for a date night or with a large group.
  • Go for a hike at Devil’s Icebox Trail and check out Devil’s Icebox Cave. Fun for all ages, this spot is located in Rock Bridge Memorial State Park in Columbia. Devil’s Icebox Cave is currently closed to visitors while the resident bats recover from a fungus, but it is still fun to stroll and explore the area, taking in all the natural sights and sounds.
  • Engage with wildlife and the natural area around you at the Runge Conservation Nature Center. The Center features live animal exhibits, free public programming and more to teach the next generation about nature. While on-site, guests are also encouraged to walk the 2.4 miles of trails through the area to observe woodlands, prairies, glades and more.
  • See the famous Budweiser Clydesdales at their breeding facility, Warm Springs Ranch. Choose from a variety of experiences at this ranch that will get you up close with these beautiful creatures. You can do everything from watch live training demonstrations to learning about the history of these majestic creatures.
