The Mark Twain National Forest is a scenic spot for campers, hikers, bikers and anyone who enjoys the great outdoors. With more than 750 miles of trail and 1.9 million acres of natural beauty, the Mark Twain National Forest in the Ozarks of Missouri is truly a spot where anyone can connect with nature in any way that speaks to their soul. If you’re looking for a break from the daily grind, the Mark Twain National Forest might be just what the doctor ordered. Here are just a few ways to enjoy the sunshine and stunning beauty that awaits travelers at the Mark Twain National Forest.

Four things to do in the Mark Twain National Forest

1. Mark Twain Cave Complex- Feel like the adventurous Tom Sawyer when you explore the labyrinthine of caves that inspired one of Mark Twain’s most beloved tales. Missouri’s oldest show cave, Mark Twain Cave Complex offers up tours, gentle walking paths and more to wow visitors of all ages. You won’t want to miss this cave complex that has welcomed visitors for more than 200 years.

2. Eleven Point National Wild and Scenic River- Love to boat? Or fish? Then you won’t want to miss the Eleven Point River, a 44-mile largely unimpounded body of water that flows through the Mark Twain National Forest. There are plenty of spots to fish or float, as well as ample areas to take a boat or canoe. Camp overnight if you wish, in areas that are only reachable by boat. Outdoor enthusiasts, this spot’s for you!

3. Glade Top National Forest Scenic Byway- Explore 23 miles of the breathtaking forest by car when you drive along this scenic byway. Stop at one of the seven overlook “pull outs” that enable you to take stunning photos and admire the endless beauty of the national forest. You’ll travel approximately 500 feet above the surrounding scenery to truly enjoy the sweeping views.

4. Take a hike at the  Greer Spring Trail or the  Piney Lookout Tower Trail- Depending on how much you feel like stretching your legs, these are two great trails for hiking through the national forest. The Greer Spring Trail takes you 0.9 miles to view the Greer Spring, the second-largest in Missouri. The Piney Lookout Tower Trail is a four mile hike that is a moderate loop with 500 feet of elevation change. This one is for those who enjoy a challenge!

Don’t forget about camping, horseback riding, ATVing and more. There are countless ways to enjoy the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri.
