The Ozark Trail spans many miles through the Ozark Mountains of central and south Missouri. Trails start just north of Highway 160 in the south and just south of Highway 44 in the north. Currently, the Trail includes 430 miles of mostly-connected trails. When completed, the trail will encompass about 500 miles of hikable and bikable trails in Missouri. Eventually, the plan is to connect the Ozark Trail through to the state of Arkansas, encompassing more than 700 total miles visitors can enjoy on foot, on bike, on horseback and more.
Where should I stay if I want to enjoy some hiking along the trail?
The route you choose along the Ozark Trail depends largely on where in the area you plan to stay! The Bass River Resort in Steelville, Missouri, is a great spot to call base while you enjoy hiking and other outdoor recreation in and around the Ozark Trail. Located at the north end of the trail, the Bass River Resort enables you to enjoy some floating, kayaking and tubing adventures along the Courtois, Huzzah, and Meramec Rivers before or after you hit the trails. If you are hiking the entire trail through, you will love calling the Bass River Resort home before or after your exciting excursion.
How long does it take to hike the Ozark Trail? What can I expect to see along the way?
The Ozark Trail is well-maintained, but the hiking varies in difficulty level depending on what part of the trail you are on. Many hikers can hike the entirety of the connected part of the trail in about a month, but the amount of time depends largely on your fitness level, how far you plan to go each day and other factors. But plan to spend at least a month hiking through.
Along your exciting journey, you can expect to see a variety of wildlife (including deer, bison and bears), mountainous terrain and rivers, including the Arkansas and Missouri Rivers. The Ozark Trail is truly a remarkable spot you won’t find anywhere else.
When is the best time to hike the Ozark Trail?
There isn’t really a wrong time to hike the Ozark Trail, but it depends on your weather preferences. Spring and Fall are the most popular because of the cooler temps, however, some people do prefer to hike in summer or winter. Pick what works for you and plan your trip.
Happy Trails along the Ozark Trail in Missouri!
